What are emergency evacuation diagrams?

Basically, emergency evacuation diagrams are way finding maps used to direct any person in a building or area away from danger to a safe place.

 

These plans must be designed in accordance with strict guidelines and regulations set down within the Australian Standard 3745:2010 and they must include a number of minimum elements such as fire extinguishers, fire hydrants, and other important information.

Where should emergency evacuation diagrams be installed and how?

It is crucial that the orientation, position and location of emergency evacuation diagram maps are compliant with the Australian Standard 3745:2010. You must be sure that the locations have been well considered and are installed correctly.

What are the requirements for evacuation diagrams inclusions?

The following must be included in each emergency evacuation diagram as a minimum but there are other items that can be included in certain situations:

  • A pictorial representation of the floor or area, of specific minimum dimensions
  • The title ‘Evacuation Diagram’
  • The ‘you are here’ location/s
  • The designated exits in the facility, which must be shown in green and uses the correct pictograms

The following communications equipment, if installed, should also be shown:

    • Warden intercommunication points
    • Manual call points, which shall be red, and emergency call points
    • Main controls/panels for the occupant warning equipment
    • Hose reels
    • Hydrants
    • Extinguishers, which shall be the appropriate colour as specified in as/nzs 1841.1.
    • Fire blankets
    • Fire indicator panel (FIP), if provided
    • Refuges, if present
    • Validity date
    • Location of assembly area(s)
    • A legend, which shall reflect the symbols used

Who should have evacuation diagrams?

Evacuation plans are mandatory for all Australian workplaces and multiple residency buildings. The work health and safety legislation requires a person conducting a business or undertaking (PCBU) to provide evacuation procedures for workers and occupants of a facility.
